Fujikawa, Garza to make Iowa rehab starts

By Bruce Levine

CHICAGO -- Rehab pitching outings are set for Chicago Cubs pitchers Kyuji Fujikawa and Matt Garza at Triple-A Iowa over the next few days.

Fujikawa will pitch one inning on Sunday as he attempts to return from a forearm strain that has had him on the DL since April 13.

"It has been tough not being able to help the team," Fujikawa said through a team translator. "From a different perspective looking from the outside, I am able to see different things and learn watching the games."

Fujikawa is unsure how long he will need to get in game shape.

Garza is slated to pitch Monday and will try to throw 50 to 60 pitches. The Cubs will evaluate him after his third outing. Manager Dale Sveum said Garza needs to build up to around 100 pitches in order to be ready to take his rotation spot. Sveum is not sure who will be coming out of the starting rotation when Garza returns.

"Sometimes those things work themselves out by the time he is ready to pitch," Sveum said. "If not we all know it is going to be one heck of a decision of what we are going to do."

Garza injured his left lat on Feb. 17 in spring training. He made his first rehab start Wednesday at Double-A Tennessee and went 2 2/3 innings and threw 42 pitches in the start.
