On 2nd thought, Wood may pitch in ASG

By Jesse Rogers

CHICAGO – On second thought, Chicago Cubs pitcher Travis Wood may pitch in the All-Star Game next Tuesday despite being the Cubs' Sunday night starter against the St. Louis Cardinals.

On Monday, Cubs manager Dale Sveum intimated Wood would be unavailable to pitch as most Sunday pitchers are replaced on the roster for the All-Star Game played two days later. But a rule in the new CBA states that a pitcher can elect to pitch no more than one inning -- or a set amount of pitches – even if he starts his team's game on Sunday.

"Whatever happens it will depend a lot on how Sunday goes," Sveum said on Tuesday. "It's going to be a side day anyway. I have no problem pitching one inning or 20 pitches, just the same you would be pitch on your side. He goes all out on his side days anyway."

Wood is the Cubs lone All-Star and if he throws an exorbitant amount of pitches on Sunday -- or even Tuesday night against the Angels -- he may be replaced on the roster altogether. Otherwise he can pitch no more than the one inning.

Wood is 5-6 with a 2.69 ERA entering Tuesday's game.
