Sveum: Garza will pitch Monday
By Bruce Levine
DENVER -- Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum expects Matt Garza to pitch for his team on Monday evening.
“I would say 100 percent he will be pitching tomorrow,” Sveum said before Sunday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.
Garza last pitched on July 13, allowing two runs in 6 2/3 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. Including the All-Star break, Garza will have had eight days off in between starts.
As Sveum alluded to, there is no sense a trade is imminent at this time.
“I haven’t (heard from the front office) lately,” Sveum said. “Like I said, it doesn’t change my life. When I get a phone call we will obviously make the adjustments. These things are out of my hands but it doesn’t change me or what I am doing. That is not what I get paid for.”
Sveum said there are no contingency plans to have a pitcher waiting in case Garza is dealt between Sunday and Monday night.
"He's pitching," Sveum said. "There is only a 50-50 chance of things happening most of the time anyway. It is hard to put a label on what Garza is going through. There are only one to two elite pitchers that happen to be pitching this good and be in that situation. Garza happens to be that guy this year."
