Downpour washes out Cubs' day game
By Jesse Rogers
The Chicago Cubs' Cactus League game against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday afternoon has been canceled due to unplayable conditions at Cubs Park in Mesa.
A hard downpour of rain occurred about 30 minutes before gametime, which was schduled for 2:05 pm CST. The tarp was put on the field but after it was removed it was determined the field was unplayable. Large puddles could be seen behind the infield.
The game will not be made up. The Cubs are scheduled to play the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night at Salt River. That game is still on.
Saturday afternoon's starter, Travis Wood, will pitch a two-inning simulated game in the batting cages while Edwin Jackson is still slated to throw against the Diamondbacks at night. Carlos Villanueva will follow Jackson on the mound for two innings.
Tickets to Saturday's game should be saved and can be used for a future spring training contest.
