Lopez joins Cubs; Berg demoted

By Bruce Levine

CHICAGO -- Newly acquired pitcher Rodrigo Lopez is in uniform for Friday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. As previously reported by ESPNChicago.com, reliever Justin Berg was sent back to Triple-A Iowa to make room on the roster.

Cubs manager Mike Quade said Lopez and Casey Coleman will be in the bullpen Friday. The Cubs will have to send another pitcher to Triple-A on Saturday when Randy Wells is activated off the disabled list to start against the Pirates.

Lopez, who was 6-1 with a 2.59 ERA for Triple-A Gwinnett, will go into the rotation at some point. The Cubs need a fifth starter on Monday.

"He just showed up," Quade said. "Today was his day to pitch in Triple-A. Heck, if he is on his turn there is no sense wasting him if we need him. Then we'll take a look at what we need."

It's likely that a pitcher will be sent out when Wells is activated. Coleman may be on the bubble.

To make room for Lopez, right-handed pitcher Robert Coello was designated for assignment.

  • Outfield prospect Brett Jackson, who has been rehabbing a deeply bruised left pinkie, will return to Double-A Tennessee this weekend. Cubs Vice President of Player Personnel Oneri Fleita said Jackson could be ready for the major leagues soon.

"The beauty of Brett Jackson is he always had a good eye," Fleita said. "He takes his walks. He's always going to throw to the right base. He has a good foundation that will allow him to have success. If the opportunity comes up [for a promotion] why not?"
