Cubs hope to finalize staff this week

By Bruce Levine

DALLAS – The Chicago Cubs have yet to fill out their 2012 coaching staff. Manager Dale Sveum said on Tuesday that the team should have a finalized announcement sometime this week.

“We are pretty much done now,” Sveum said. “Now we just have one more thing. That is our first-base coach. Everything else is pretty much done. We will probably announce it in the next few days.”

As of now, Sveum’s staff fills out as follows: Rudy Jaramillo will return as hitting coach; ex-Houston caoch Jamie Quirk will take over as bench coach; former Brewers coach Chris Bosio will take over as pitching coach; Pat Listach will move from bench coach to third-base coach; and Lester Strode will return as the bullpen coach.

Last week the team talked to Brewers infielder Craig Counsel about joining the coaching staff. Counsel is still seeking a job as a big league infielder, however.

One major league source indicated Dave McKay is being considered for the first-base coaching job with the Cubs. McKay had previously coached under Tony La Russa for 23 years in Oakland and St. Louis. After La Russa resigned in October, McKay was offered another position within the Cardinals organization, but declined.
