Opening Day weather OK ... for now
By Doug Padilla
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – As if it wasn’t enough to keep his eye on a spring roster that is still 40 players strong with a week to go, Cubs manager Dale Sveum admitted to peeking at the weather forecast next week.
Sveum said he already saw that when the team conducts a workout at Wrigley Field on Wednesday of next week it will be raining with a high of around 60 degrees.
He had yet to see what the weather predictions were for Opening Day just 24 hours later.
According to weather.com, it will be mostly cloudy with a high of 56 degrees and just a 10 percent chance of rain. If that doesn’t sound ideal, consider that it was 41 on Opening Day last season with a 7 mph wind.
Unpredictable spring weather is one of the reasons Major League Baseball piggy backs a day off with Opening Day in many cities just in case it needs to reschedule Game 1. The Cubs will take on the Washington Nationals on April 5, but will be off April 6, before finishing the three-game series April 7-8.
