CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs placed right-handed pitcher Rafael Dolis on the disabled list with a forearm strain and selected the contract of reliever Blake Parker from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, the team announced.

Dolis appeared in five games for Chicago this season, throwing five innings without giving up a run. Parker, 27, pitched in seven games last season for the Cubs, giving up three earned runs in six innings. In 16 appearances for Iowa this season he was 0-1 with a 2.04 ERA and seven saves. He was one of the last cut-downs near the end of spring training.

To make room for Parker on the Cubs' 40-man roster the team designated reliever Alex Burnett for assignment. Burnett was picked up off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles at the beginning of the week.

The Cubs play the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday night at Wrigley Field. Parker will be in uniform for the game.

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs recalled right-handed reliever Zach Putnam from Triple-A Iowa and optioned pitcher Alex Burnett.

To make room for Putnam on the 40-man roster, the Cubs placed reliever Kyuji Fujikawa on the 60-day disabled list.

Putnam, 25, is 1-1 with four saves and a 3.26 ERA in 17 relief appearances with Iowa this season. Putnam was one of the last cuts in spring training and has made 10 career relief appearances in the major leagues.

"I had a pretty good spring and obviously was disappointed I wasn't able to break camp with the team," Putnam said Thursday morning before the Cubs played the Chicago White Sox. "It's one of those things you have to keep on keeping on."

Burnett was sent down after being picked up off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles earlier in the week. He pitched a scoreless inning against the Sox in his Cubs debut on Wednesday.

Fujikawa is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery after injuring himself in Sunday's win in Cincinnati.

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs bullpen has been a sore spot for most of the 2013 season.

With the loss of Kyuji Fujikawa for what could be months, if not the whole season, the Cubs are hoping right-hander Alex Burnett can help.

Manager Dale Sveum will use the veteran in middle relief for now as he assimilates to his new club and new teammates.

“We haven’t had any role talk,” said Burnett, who was claimed off waivers from Baltimore on Monday. “I will just be down there at their disposal and be ready to go whenever they need me.”

Burnett has made 176 major league appearances spanning parts of four seasons. The Cubs are his fourth team since the end of spring training.

“Being a relief pitcher a lot of strange moves happen (to you),” Burnett said. “Everybody needs relief pitching and it changes every day.”
