Cubs lose Flaherty in Rule 5 draft, add 2

The Chicago Cubs lost infielders Ryan Flaherty and Marwin Gonzalez in Thursday's Rule 5 draft but selected pitcher Lendy Castillo from the Philadelphia Phillies and infielder Ricky Alvarez from the Los Angeles Angels.

The Cubs selected Castillo with the sixth overall pick of the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Castillo, 22, is 7-4 with a 2.43 ERA in 38 minor league games (12 starts) since being converted from shortstop following the 2009 season.

Castillo went 4-2 with a 2.54 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 21 games primarily as a reliever for Single-A Lakewood of the South Atlantic League last season.

Alvarez, 22, is a career .251 hitter in 261 minor league games. A right-handed batter, he posted career highs of 31 doubles, 10 homers and 64 RBIs with Single-A Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League last season.

Flaherty, a first-round draft pick of the Cubs in 2008, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles with the fourth overall selection. He batted .305 with 14 home runs and 66 RBIs at Double-A Tennessee last season before moving up to Triple-A Iowa where he batted .237.

Gonzalez, 22, was selected in the first round (23rd overall) by the Boston Red Sox. He batted .288 with four home runs and 29 RBIs splitting time between Tennessee and Iowa last season.

The Cubs' 40-man roster now stands at 35 players.
