The Good: Jeff Samardzija worked his way through four innings, giving up two runs while throwing each of his pitches for the first time this spring. He gave up no walks while striking out five and the hit that scored the Giants runs came on a good, low pitch to Pablo Sandoval, who golfed one to the outfield. ... Emilio Bonifacio had another hit batting leadoff, as did Jorge Soler, who was 1-for-1 as a late-inning replacement.
The Bad: The Cubs' first 15 batters to face Giants starter Matt Cain made outs fairly easily, with few hard-hit balls among them. It was no surprise that the comeback victory occurred after he left the game.
The OK: Mike Olt struck out for a team-leading seventh time, but hit the ball hard up the middle later in the game for a base hit. He’s 4-for-17 this spring as he tries to win a spot on the 25-man roster.
Cutdowns: Before the game, manager Rick Renteria indicated that the Cubs should be announcing a first round of cuts by Thursday, their lone off-day of the spring.
Las Vegas: One player that won’t be cut by Thursday is third baseman Kris Bryant. He’ll accompany the team to his hometown of Las Vegas this weekend when the Cubs play the New York Mets in exhibition games both Saturday and Sunday. The Cubs should announce the rest of the roster for Las Vegas by Tuesday morning.
