Rick Malnati has resigned as an assistant coach at Loyola University to become Fenwick High School’s boys varsity basketball coach.
Malnati spent two years on Loyola coach Porter Moser’s staff.
“I am extremely happy for Rick to be able to once again be a head coach,” Moser said in a statement. “Not only was he a valuable member of the staff, but he was also a good friend. Rick has the rare ability to impact people’s lives and I know he will do just that at Fenwick.”
Malnati previously was New Trier’s boys varsity basketball coach from 1996-2008. He coached the Trevians to two state tournament appearances.

Former Kansas guard Milton Doyle committed to Loyola on Wednesday.
Doyle originally committed to Florida International while at Marshall High School in Chicago. He was allowed out of his letter of intent when Isiah Thomas was fired. He later committed to Kansas and was enrolled there until recently. He played with the Jayhawks during their recent trip to Europe.
Doyle, a freshman guard, chose the Ramblers over Green Bay. Doyle will enroll into Loyola in the fall semester and will likely have to sit out this season per NCAA transfer rules.
“I’m just happy to move forward,” Doyle’s mother Lisa Green said. “Just happy he still had the opportunities he had. We were just trying to make sure it was really, really something that was right for him.
“The No. 1 thing is it’s close to home. The name Loyola is of course a prestigious school in Chicago. He’s able to be at a good school, be close to home and do what he likes to do.”
Doyle, a 6-4 guard, averaged 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists while playing in the Chicago Public League his senior season. He was selected to the ESPNChicago.com all-area team.
Loyola assistant coach Armon Gates was the lead recruiter on Doyle.
The Ramblers were 7-23 overall and 1-17 in the Horizon last season.

Proviso East senior point guard Keith Carter has de-committed from Loyola and will reopen his recruitment.
Carter, a 6-foot point guard, committed to the Ramblers on Aug. 24, but recently decided otherwise.
“I did so just after talking to my father,” Carter said on Monday. “I just want to check out other schools. I want to give myself time. Loyola seemed like they were OK with it. I think I rushed into it before.”
Carter was unsure what schools he would be looking at now. He had originally chosen Loyola over Creighton.

St. Charles North junior guard Quinten Payne has committed to Loyola.
Payne, a 6-4 shooting guard, chose the Ramblers over Colorado State, Davidson, Georgia Tech, Miami-Ohio, Ohio and Stanford.
Payne is the younger brother of Loyola point guard Cully Payne, who transferred to the Ramblers from Iowa after last season.
"I made my decision on everything else, but he was just a big addition to it," Payne said of his brother. "I've been playing out my options and what was best for me, and I decided Loyola was best for me. It wasn't an easy decision, but it was the way they recruited me, the way they made me feel like a part of the family, the way they made me feel like their No. 1 recruit."
Payne and Cully have never played on the same team together because they've always been four years apart. At Loyola, they'll have one season and possible two to play together. Cully is petitioning to the NCAA for another year of eligibility.
Payne could have waited to make his decision after another high school and club season, but he knew Loyola was the right place for him now.
"I'm not a big-name guy whether it's the Big Ten, ACC," said Payne, who averaged 17 points last season. "I personally feel like if you have the right team and the right personnel and the coaches have love for you, you can be successful anywhere. Look at Butler, VCU, any of them. I'm super happy where I'm at, and I think in the end it'll be perfect."
Payne is Loyola's first Class of 2013 commitment.
