Curie senior defensive back Maurice Fleming Jr. committed to Iowa on Thursday.

Fleming Jr., who is 6-foot and 185 pounds, picked the Hawkeyes over Indiana. He was recruited by Iowa to play defensive back and Indiana at wide receiver.

“It was stressful,” Fleming Jr. said. “I’m happy with my decision and so is my mom. We decided by asking which place is going to get me to the next level. [Iowa] said they’ll get me to the next level. I want to be a shutdown corner. I know there aren’t many in the NFL or in college, but that’s what I want to work to be.”

Fleming Jr. was also told by Iowa’s coaches he could see some time at wide receiver and on kick and punt returns. At Curie, he has played quarterback, safety, cornerback and returned kicks.

“For us, he’s a do-everything guy,” Curie coach Tyson LeBlanc said. “He’s probably one of the best athletes I’ve had the pleasure to be around, definitely coach. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him, but if he’s not playing on Sundays four years from now I would be surprised.”

Iowa now has four Class of 2012 commitments.
