East St. Louis could play in 7A playoffs

East St. Louis has been granted a waiver to play in the Class 7A football playoffs this season, the IHSA announced on Monday.

East St. Louis was originally slated to be in Class 6A due to its enrollment.

The Flyers are expected to make an already tough Class 7A even tougher. East St. Louis is 2-1 this season, but its only loss came to an out-of-state opponent.

Last season, East St. Louis went 9-0 and was a No. 1 seed headed into the Class 7A playoffs, but was removed from the playoffs when it was discovered the Flyers had used an ineligible player.

East St. Louis has won seven state football titles with the last one coming in 2008.

Wheaton Warrenville South has won the Class 7A state championship the past two seasons.
