Johnson, Kerkman McDonald's coaches

Zion-Benton's Tanya Johnson and West Aurora's Gordie Kerkman were announced as McDonald's All-American Games coaches on Thursday.

Johnson will coach the West girls team. She has a 634-191 career record, two state championships, seven sectional titles and 17 regional titles in 28 seasons. She was named the IHSA coach of the year after leading Zion-Benton to a Class 4A runner-up finish in 2011.

Kerkman will coach the West boys team. Kerkman has compiled a 726-289 record, won one state championship and 16 conference championships and made five state tournament appearances in 36 seasons.

Johnson's assistants will be Loyola's Mary Just and Downers Grove South's Ellen O'Brian. Kerkman's assistants will be West Aurora's Rick Thompson and Curtis Shaw.

Scott County (Georgetown, Ky.) coach Billy Hicks will coach the East boys team, and Spring Valley (Columbia, S.C.) coach Anne Long will coach the East girls team.

The McDonald's All-Americans Games will be held on March 28 at the United Center in Chicago. The 11th annual girls game will be at 6 p.m. and shown on ESPNU. The 35th annual boys game will be at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.
