Here are a few prep hoops thoughts on this Thursday night.
|Curie could be a tough out for Steve Taylor and Simeon in the CPL title game.|
1. Simeon and Curie are definitively the two premier Public League teams. That was the thought before the city playoffs began, but they affirmed that by both reaching Friday’s title game. This will be their second meeting of the year. Simeon won the first round, defeating Curie in the championship game of the Pontiac holiday tournament. The difference this time around will be Curie won’t have played an overtime affair with Warren earlier in the day. Simeon did also play a tight game with Peoria Manual in the Pontiac semifinals. Either way, both should be rested.
2. A lot has been made of the state’s underclassmen, but the one name that continues to fly under the radar is Zion-Benton sophomore Malik Yarbrough. He’s not yet ranked nationally by ESPN, but it’s only a matter of time. Yarbrough continued his stellar sophomore season with a 40-point performance against Grayslake Central on Wednesday. He was 14-of-22 from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds.
3. Too many people jump to call a player a recruiting steal for a school, but Warren’s Nathan Boothe is truly that for Toledo. The MAC is often an undersized league, and Boothe and his 6-8, 250-pound-plus frame should have a fine career there. Boothe is also more than size. He’s good around the rim and can step out to the perimeter. He’s been close to a double-double most of the year. He can be seen against Proviso East at Saturday’s City-Suburban Showdown at Proviso West.
