CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham can’t explain why he’s always had the Chicago Cubs’ number.

It’s not as if he’s taken the rivalry more seriously than most and has some intense hatred for the team from the other side of the city.

As Beckham explained after going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in the White Sox’s 7-0 win over the Cubs on Wednesday, it’s just one of those things.

“Some people play better against certain teams, in certain stadiums, that kind of thing,” Beckham said. “There’s nothing I can point to. I think both sides enjoy playing the games because it’s against the city rival and the fans are a little more into it. But I don’t think there’s any rhyme or reason why I’ve played well against them.”

Whether it can be explained or not, there’s no denying Beckham’s fortune is better against the Cubs, and they’ll be glad not to see him any longer this season. In 22 career games, he has 25 hits, four home runs and 12 RBIs in 72 at-bats against the Cubs.

Beckham’s .347 average against the Cubs in four seasons is higher than his average against any opponent he’s faced more than three games in his career. The other team he does fare well on average against is the Minnesota Twins and has hit .275 against them in 49 games.
