Friday’s matchup of aces Chris Sale and Zack Greinke was a pitcher’s duel out of another era as both starters pitched shutout baseball. Greinke wound up with his eighth win when the Brewers scored a run in the 10th inning for a 1-0 victory over the White Sox.
Sale allowed just four hits in eight innings of work, walking one batter while striking out seven. Greinke was equally effective over nine innings, giving up just three hits.
“You are looking at two guys that can pitch,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “It’s one of those [games] where you saw a great matchup and both of them battling all the way.”
Sale, who is making a strong case for not only going to the All-Star game but for being named the American League starter, is 5-0 with a 1.61 ERA over his last seven starts. He threw 108 pitches in his eight innings of work.
“You would like to leave him in there for a longer time,” Ventura said. “Again, we are looking at the big picture with him. It had nothing to do with the way he was pitching tonight, we are just looking at it for long term.”
The 23-year-old left-hander was working on six days rest and appeared strong against a good Brewers lineup.
“Short rest, long rest you still have a job to do and that is to go out there and execute,” Sale said.
Going up against a former Cy Young winner really didn’t seem to have any impact on Sale, who leads the Sox in wins with eight.
“It really doesn’t matter who is across the way or what team you are facing, you still want to do the best for your team,” Sale said. “He was tough on everybody with the stuff he was throwing. He was tough and we got beat, it is as simple as that.”
Brewers DH Rickie Weeks, who hit the game-winning single in the top of the 10th inning off of reliever Jesse Crain, was impressed with Sale, who was facing Milwaukee for the first time.
“Early on it looked like he was struggling with his command,” Weeks said about Sale’s early innings. “He seemed to lock in after that.”
The nine shutout innings for Greinke was a season high. Sale’s eight shutout innings tied for the longest he has gone in a game without giving up a run in his career. He did it previously against Houston on June 9.
