Chicago White Sox starter Chris Sale will get 10-12 days off between Tuesday’s start and his next outing the weekend after the All-Star break.
The Sox will rest their top pitcher and then try to soften his innings load moving toward the second half of the season. Many clubs shut down their young starters between 140 and 150 innings pitched to protect them from overuse. In Sale’s case, he will have over 100 innings pitched going into his next start on either July 15 or 16.
“Whether I want to see [Sale] rest or not, it is going to happen” White Sox general manager Ken Williams said on Tuesday.
“I mentioned to you folks a number of weeks back that we were going to give him a break. He pitched virtually on a once-in-every-six-days schedule the whole first half. We basically had him on a college rotation that wasn’t as taxing. Now going into the second half we are going to give him another break.”
American League All-Star manager Ron Washington was told by the White Sox that Sale will be available to throw one inning at the Midsummer Classic on July 10 in Kansas City.
“It made sense because All-Star Game or not he was going to have a side day,” Williams said. “So if it is front of the entire baseball world, go for it. You earned it, you deserve it.”
Sale had the lowest ERA in baseball at 2.27 entering play on Tuesday night.
