Kirby Lee/US PresswireJake Peavy said Yu Darvish's fame in Japan made him tough to beat for an All-Star berth.Voting for the 2012 All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote will conclude at 3 p.m. CT on Thursday. Twitter votes will also be included in the balloting on Thursday. Votes must use the player's designated Twitter hashtag, which for Peavy is #TakeJake.
MLB.com announced Darvish, who is from Japan, led the American League voting early on Thursday.
"We knew were up about against a daunting task with Japan and Yu Darvish," Peavy said prior to Thursday's game. "Obviously you're voting against a country. You're talking about having Elvis Presley go on American Idol. We knew we were up against a tough task. At the same time, we just had a lot of fun with it for myself on down.
"If it's meant to be, it's meant to be. If not, then it is what it is."
The White Sox unveiled a series of six videos throughout the week to promote their TakeJake campaign. The videos included Gordon Beckham impersonating Peavy in an interview, White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf in a "The Most Interesting Man in the World" parody, Illinois governor Pat Quinn supporting Peavy, USA hockey coach Herb Brooks' speech prior to playing Russia in the 1980 Olympics voiced by a six-year-old boy, a political campaign type of video and the St. Louis Cardinals' David Freese and Peavy expressing support for each other's vote.
"It's been overwhelming to see the support from your teammates, your staff, front office staff from (communication senior vice president) Scott Reifert to (sales and marketing senior vice president) Brooks Boyer," Peavy said. "It's humbling. It's uncomfortable to ever promote yourself in anything you do.
"I've gotten so many texts and calls about this ad, that ad or something someone heard or saw. That's all fun for everybody. ... I've gotten so many texts and calls from people that saw Jerry's ad or the kid or the 1980's speech and obviously Gordon. Everybody on Twitter that I know or I follow or follows me has commented on Gordon."
However the voting finished on Wednesday, Peavy said he was just happy to be having the success he's had this season after a rocky first 2 ½ seasons with the White Sox. He's 6-5 with a 2.96 ERA this season.
"Just to be in consideration for the All-Star Game with all I've been through here, it means a lot to me to be ever be back in this position again," said Peavy, who is a three-time All-Star.
