CHICAGO -- The White Sox signed outfielder Dewayne Wise to a minor league contract on Friday. Wise, who will report to Triple A Charlotte, played in 141 games with the Sox from 2008-09.

Wise appeared in 56 games with the Yankees this season, hitting .262 with eight RBIs in 61 at-bats before New York released him on July 30 after the 34-year-old refused an assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, according to the New York Daily News.

Wise was a .236 hitter in his two seasons with the White Sox, but he has a place in the franchise's history. On July 23, 2009, Wise's over-the-wall catch on then Devil Rays outfielder Gabe Kapler's near home run in the ninth inning preserved Mark Buehrle's eventual perfect game.

“Dewayne was having a good year with the Yankees, did a lot of good things with the Yankees,” White Sox general manager Ken Williams said on Friday. “Unfortunately some of them were against us, and we feel he needs some at bats because he hasn’t played in a while. But we feel that at some point he can be part of the equation and help us on the bench.”
