Guillen: Only hitters win Gold Gloves

CHICAGO -- Finding yet another topic where he didn’t mind voicing his opinion, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Thursday that the Gold Glove Award isn’t a true representation of the best fielding player at each position in each league.

“In my opinion, if you can hit you win Gold Glove,” said Guillen said, who won the award himself in 1990, batting .279/.312/.341 that season. “I should have won five or six, but I was a horse [expletive] hitter.”

He is hardly the first to criticize the process, pointing out the most criticized Gold Glove winner of all time.

“Rafael Palmeiro won a Gold Glove and he only played first base for a week,” Guillen said about the 1999 award, when Palmeiro actually played 28 games at first base. “I’ll just leave it right there.”

He didn’t leave it right there, of course.

“As soon as you win one you have a chance to win a few,” Guillen said. “I’m not saying that the guys that win it don’t deserve it. But if you look at a Gold Glove day-by-day, year-by-year, there are a lot of guys there that shouldn’t be up there."

With the Mariners having played the White Sox seven times in the past 11 days, it was the perfect opportunity for Guillen to try and prove his point.

“Right now for me, and I could be wrong, I think the kid from Seattle is the best center fielder in the game, no doubt,” Guillen said about the Mariners’ Franklin Gutierrez. “The kid from Anaheim, Torii Hunter, great center fielder. But to me, the best one, there is no doubt in my mind, is Gutierrez and I only have seen him play nine games and I don’t see anybody better than him out there.”
