CHICAGO -- Here’s a quick look at the Detroit Tigers' 8-5 win over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday.

How it happened: Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer continued his recent dominance, picking up his sixth win in seven starts by allowing four hits, one run and no walks and striking out seven in six innings He increased his major-league leading strikeout total to 220. White Sox starting pitcher Gavin Floyd, who was making his first start since Aug. 26, matched Scherzer’s performance until he ran into trouble in the fifth inning. He allowed two hits, two runs and a walk in the inning, before he was pulled. The Tigers did the bulk of their damage against the White Sox’s bullpen. Prince Fielder had a three-run home run off reliever Leyson Septimo in the seventh inning, and the Tigers added two more runs off Dylan Axelrod in the eighth inning. Kevin Youkilis homered twice and drove in four runs for the White Sox.

What it means: The Tigers cut the White Sox’s lead in the American League Central to one game. Their final head-to-head game of the season will be on Thursday.

Outside the box: Twelve of the White Sox’s 15 runs in the series have come from home runs. They’ve also scored 26 of their last 34 runs from homers in their last seven games.
