How it happened: Gavin Floyd started well, striking out seven Angels in the first five innings, but the White Sox’s losing streak was extended to five games. The Sox missed an early opportunity to score on Angels ace Jered Weaver in the first inning when Weaver labored, throwing 32 pitches. But Weaver struck out Alex Rios with the bases loaded on a change up in the eleventh pitch of the at-bat and retired A.J. Pierzynski on a force out to get out of jam. The Angels broke through against Floyd in the sixth inning. Albert Pujols doubled home two runs and was Kendrys Morales followed with a long home run. The Sox got one run back in the seventh when Pierzynski doubled and eventually scored on Dayan Viciedo's sacrifice fly.
What it means: The Tigers losing Game 1 of their doubleheader with the Minnesota Twins assures the Sox of going home with at least a share of first place to start their final homestand. The loss extended the Sox’s losing streak to five games, tying a season high. Weaver became the first 19-game winner in the American League in 2012 .The Sox finished the road trip with a 4-5 record. They have won only 5 of their last 19 road games.
Outside the box: Manager Robin Ventura will stay with the rotation the way it is until at least Wednesday. He may insert a new pitcher in the mix to gave his starters one more day of rest heading into the final seven games of the season. The last time Chicago was in first place this late in the year was the 163rd game of the 2008 season. The Sox defeated the Twins to win the division on a Jim Thome walk-off home run.
Up next: The White Sox return home for the final homestand of the season. They play three games against the Cleveland Indians, beginning Monday night . That is followed by four games versus the Tampa Rays. Sox lefty Chris Sale (17-7, 2.82 ERA) and Cleveland righty Zach McAllister (5-8, 4.10) match up in the series opener in a 7:10 start.
Rapid Reaction: The offense struggled again in the Sox's fifth straight loss.
