CHICAGO -- Here’s a quick look at the Cleveland Indians' 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday.

How it happened: The White Sox’s pitching staff did them in against the Indians. The Sox walked a season-high 12 hitters while using seven different pitchers. Starter Hector Santiago allowed three runs and four walks in 3 1/3 innings. Their bullpen, which had been pretty reliable as of late, walked eight more hitters. The Indians broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning with an RBI groundout by Shin-Soo Choo. The White Sox led 3-1 after the first inning with RBIs by Paul Konerko, Alex Rios and A.J. Pierzynski, but the offense again slowed down from there. Jason Kipnis, who grew up in the Chicago suburbs, had two RBIs and three walks for the Indians. Indians pitchers walked six hitters.

What it means: The White Sox surrendered first place in the American League Central to the Detroit Tigers. Detroit defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Wednesday and are now one game ahead of the White Sox, who have lost seven of their last eight games. The White Sox had owned at least a share of first place since July 24.

Outside the box: The White Sox are 30-for-167 with runners in scoring position in their last 20 games. They were 3-for-12 on Wednesday.

Up next: The White Sox begin a four-game home series with the Tampa Bay Rays at 7:10 p.m. CT Thursday. Jake Peavy (11-12, 3.40) will start for the White Sox, and will be opposed by the Rays’ James Shields (15-9, 3.65).
