QuintanaJerry Lai/US PresswireJose Quintana has been one of the White Sox's surprise successes this season.
Chicago White Sox rookie pitcher Jose Quintana will start Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays, manager Robin Ventura said on Friday.

Ventura said he was still unsure about his rotation against the Cleveland Indians next week.

The White Sox entered Friday trailing the Detroit Tigers by two games in the American League Central. Both teams have six games remaining.

Quintana made his last start on Sept. 22 and allowed six hits, four runs, one earned run, five walks and struck out three in five innings. He also threw 2/3 of an inning in relief on Tuesday.

Quintana is 6-5 with a 3.60 ERA in 132 1/3 innings this season. He has pitched 24 games, including 21 starts.

Ventura said Quintana has exceeded expectations this season. Quintana began the year in the minors.

“I'd say from spring training, yeah, he surprised me because you didn't expect him to really be in the rotation and do the things that we've asked him to do,” Ventura said. “He's had some big spots and I think the rain-out game with Detroit (on Sept. 17), one of them that if you're coming out of spring training say you're going to have him go for that game you'd be surprised.”
