Stewart still will participate in major-league camp as a non-roster invitee to spring training.
The White Sox traded Stewart and Brent Lillibridge this past season to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Kevin Youkilis. Stewart was then traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates this offseason before he was designated for assignment earlier this month. The White Sox moved in with their waiver claim last week.
Stewart's outright puts the 40-man roster at 39, leaving the White Sox room to make an addition, although the club is already in the neighborhood of its expected payroll of $109 million to $110 million.
Zach Stewart, claimed by the White Sox last week, was outrighted to Charlotte.
