Trade gives peek at final roster

2/22/2013

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The arrival of third baseman Conor Gillaspie from the San Francisco Giants has brought the Chicago White Sox's Opening Day roster into focus.

Gillaspie was acquired earlier Friday in exchange for minor-league right-hander Jeff Soptic.

Because Gillaspie can’t open the season in the minor leagues without passing through waivers first, it enhances his chances of breaking camp with the club.

One of the more interesting battles this spring is suddenly the one between Gillaspie and Brent Morel as a backup third baseman. Jeff Keppinger is expected to be the Opening Day third baseman.

Assuming John Danks is healthy enough to start the season on time, the following is the projected 12-man pitching staff: Chris Sale, Jake Peavy, Gavin Floyd, Danks, Jose Quintana, Addison Reed, Matt Thornton, Jesse Crain, Nate Jones, Matt Lindstrom, Hector Santiago and Donnie Veal.

Infielders and catchers expected to make the roster include: Paul Konerko, Gordon Beckham, Alexei Ramirez, Adam Dunn, Keppinger, Angel Sanchez, Tyler Flowers and Hector Gimenez.

Outfielders expected to make it include: Dayan Viciedo, Alejandro De Aza, Alex Rios and Dewayne Wise.

That would leave one spot available in a battle that comes down to not only Gillaspie and Morel, but outfielder Jordan Danks as well. Both Morel and Jordan Danks have minor-league options where Gillaspie doesn’t. Danks' chances are hurt by the fact that Gillaspie also bats left-handed.
