ARLINGTON, Texas -- When newly-acquired corner outfielder Casper Wells joined the Chicago White Sox before Tuesday’s series opener against the Texas Rangers, he donned the uniform of his fourth major league team this spring.
Four teams, all in the American League, in the space of five weeks.
“It is a record?’’ Wells said. “I don’t know.
“I’d like to say I’m getting used to it. I’ve met a lot of teammates,’’ said Wells, who is good-natured about his travels. “But I know I’m capable of playing at this level. It’s not like I’m a rookie. Every day, it is important for me to just bring it.’’
Wells replaced left fielder Alejandro De Aza in the seventh inning in Tuesday’s 10-6 loss to Texas. He struck out in his only plate appearance, one of 13 strikeouts by the White Sox Tuesday.
White Sox manager Robin Ventura is happy to have Wells’ right-handed bat. Injuries have made the lineup vulnerable to left-handed pitchers.
“We went from being too right-handed to the other way once injuries started,’’ Ventura said.
Against left-handed pitching, Wells hit .267 with seven home runs in 131 at-bats for Seattle in 2012. He is in his fourth major league season and owns a career .244 batting average with 25 home runs.
Wells, 28, was purchased by the White Sox from Oakland, where he spent only one week. Prior to that, the 6-2, 220-pounder spent less than two weeks with Toronto. Wells was with Seattle in the spring, but failed to make the team.
“My family and friends want to see me playing baseball and they tell me they feel sorry for me because of all this, but I don’t,’’ Wells said. “Everything happens for a reason. The fact that teams want me gives me confidence.’’
