Sanchez, who had been on the DL with a lower back strain since April 10, was removed from the Sox’s 40-man roster, which now stands at 39.
Sanchez was acquired as a Rule 5 draft pick in December of 2012 from the Angels organization. Before outrighting Sanchez to the minors, the White Sox offered him back to Los Angeles, as major league rules require.
The Sox will use Gordon Beckham as a backup shortstop when he returns from his rehab assignment after suffering a hamate bone break. This move will allow the team to keep an extra outfielder on the roster.
Beckham will play every day at second base when he returns, except if he’s needed to give regular shortstop Alexei Ramirez an occasional day off. Beckham played some shortstop on his rehab stint before shutting down all baseball activities until next week due to a sore hand.
“In spring training I talked to [Beckham] about it,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “We figured this would be a good time to try it down there now. We wanted to make sure it was comfortable before we made any decisions on him.”
