Report: Rangers claim Rios off waivers

8/8/2013

The Texas Rangers have put in a claim on Chicago White Sox outfielder Alex Rios, a source told ESPN Insider Jim Bowden.

The Sox have 48 hours to decide Rios' fate.

Teams typically put their players trough trade waivers at some point in August, since they can pull them back if they are claimed. Each player who makes it through revocable waivers unclaimed is then eligible to be traded to any team just like they were before July 31.

But with Texas claiming Rios, the White Sox can work a deal only with the Rangers, significantly reducing a potential return. The White Sox also have the option of handing over Rios without a trade, freeing themselves of future contract commitments. That's how the Sox acquired the outfielder from the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009.
