How it happened: Erik Johnson's second career start wasn’t much different from his first, as poor defense helped to ruin his day. He gave up six runs, but only two were earned over 3 2/3 innings; this was one start after he allowed five runs (three earned) against the Yankees last week. Conor Gillaspie had a rough day on defense, with two throwing errors and a fielding error. He could have had a fourth error after pulling Paul Konerko off the bag on a throw, but Konerko got the error for not making the catch.
What it means: Not known for his glove, Gillaspie provided solid defense early in the season, but the law of averages appears to have caught up with him. His 16 errors are second on the team to Alexei Ramirez’s 21. The only two major league third basemen with more errors are the Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman (21) and the Pirates’ Pedro Alvarez (27), and all three have played at least 16 more games than Gillaspie at third.
Outside the box: One year after leading the major leagues with a .9883 fielding percentage, the White Sox solidified their grip on the worst fielding percentage this season. It was at .980 when the game began. The White Sox’s 108 errors on the season also moved them into the MLB lead in that category, passing the Houston Astros. The Orioles entered the day with the least amount of errors in baseball (41). The White Sox also have made 19 errors during the past 11 games, with at least one in nine of those contests.
Offbeat: The White Sox gave up five unearned runs Tuesday, which is 16.66 percent of the total unearned runs they gave up all of last season. In 2012, the well-above-average defense opened the door for just 30 unearned runs. This year, the White Sox have already allowed 70 unearned runs, and the end of the season is still more than 2 1/2 weeks away.
