CHICAGO – Chicago White Sox left-hander John Danks is one of 10 finalists for the annual Hutch Award, which honors major league players who have overcome either personal or professional adversity.

Also nominated for the award is former White Sox reliever Neal Cotts, now with the Texas Rangers.

Danks missed the last four months of the 2012 season and the first 1 months of this past season as he recovered from shoulder surgery. He made 22 starts in 2013, with a 4.75 ERA.

Cotts, who pitched in all four games of the 2005 World Series for the White Sox, was out of the major leagues for 3 seasons as he dealt with injuries. He earned a bullpen spot with the Rangers this spring and posted a 1.11 ERA over 58 appearances.

Other players nominated for this year’s Hutch Award include: Jeremy Affeldt (San Francisco Giants), Craig Breslow (Boston Red Sox), Sean Doolittle (Oakland Athletics), Alex Gordon (Kansas City Royals), Raul Ibanez (Seattle Mariners), Scott Kazmir (Cleveland Indians), Andrew McCutchen (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Jason Motte (St. Louis Cardinals).

The award is named in honor of former major league player and manager Fred Hutchinson, whose playing career was interrupted for four years when he served in the Navy, and who managed for the Cincinnati Reds in the 1964 season despite being diagnosed with lung cancer. He managed off and on that year and died at the age of 45 a little more than a month after the season ended.

Founded by Hutchinson’s brother Williams Hutchinson in 1975, the Hutch Award will be presented Jan. 30 at Safeco Field in Seattle.
