Chris Sale's rehab start at Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday was called off, but not because of a setback with his arm strain.

Rain forced a postponement of Charlotte’s game at Durham, which means Sale will now have his injury rehab start moved to Friday when the teams face off in a doubleheader.

What that means for Sale’s return to the major leagues remains to be seen. While there is no harm in giving the injured Sale another day of recovery, his return to the White Sox could also could be pushed back a day.

Sale was in line to make another rehab start, or simulated game, Tuesday and then pitch in the White Sox’s May 25 game at home against the New York Yankees. The rain delay could mean that his return will be pushed back to the May 26 home game against the Cleveland Indians.

The White Sox have declined to set a date for when they expect Sale to return.

Sale has not pitched since April 17 because of a flexor muscle strain in his pitching arm. The left-hander was 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA over his first four starts.
