The left-hander, who hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since April 17 because of a strained flexor muscle in his pitching arm, walked two while striking out 11 in his scoreless outing. He threw 68 pitches, 43 for strikes.
Leadoff man/center fielder Adam Eaton (strained hamstring) also started his rehab assignment with Charlotte. He had a pair of singles in four at-bats, driving in a run as Charlotte came away with a 2-1 victory over Durham in seven innings.
Sale was supposed to start his rehab assignment Thursday, but that game at Durham was rained out. Instead, he pitched in the first game of a doubleheader Friday.
The White Sox have not scheduled a return date for Sale. It has not been ruled out that he could return for a start Wednesday at Kansas City, but it seems more likely that he will have another minor league start that day or participate in a simulated game with the major league club to get his pitch count higher.
Sale could end up returning to the White Sox for an April 26 home game against the Cleveland Indians. Before he was injured, he was 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA in four starts.
Eaton is expected to return to the White Sox for Sunday’s game at Houston. In 25 games earlier this season, Eaton was batting .276 with 14 RBIs and was a spark plug for the offense at the top of the order.
