Extra Bases: Sox get much-needed break

CHICAGO -- An unscheduled off day seemed to do the Chicago White Sox no favors this past week, so perhaps an expected one can give them what they need.

Since a rainout Tuesday that allowed the White Sox to customize their rotation, they have gone 1-4 and have lost all the optimism that arose from a series victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Monday will afford the White Sox another chance to get away from things and decompress. It should be useful, since starting Tuesday the White Sox open a two-game series against the San Francisco Giants, the team with the best record in baseball.

“Days off, depending on who you ask, they can be a good thing or a bad thing,” Adam Dunn said. “This is a scheduled day off and I don’t know how important it is, but we just need to find out a way to play better.”

The White Sox’s current four-game losing streak matched a season high previously done May 10-13, and they have dropped four games under .500 for the first time this season at 33-37.

They were swept by the Kansas City Royals over the weekend, the second time they have been swept in their last four series after they were dispatched by the Los Angeles Angels one weekend earlier.

“I don’t know if there’s anything you can do,” Gordon Beckham said. “We are just going to show up on Tuesday and get right back at it. We have an off-day. It’s the best thing for us right now. I think that like I said, I don’t think it’s a lack of effort. I don’t think it’s a lack of wanting it. Sometimes baseball goes in this up-and-down cycle.

Keep an eye on this: The White Sox, who will open their final interleague home series Tuesday with two games against the San Francisco Giants, are 8-8 in interleague play this season.

Question of the day: What is the biggest difference between the White Sox offense that was producing early in the season and the one that is now failing to deliver runs on a consistent basis?
