CLEVELAND -- Phil Humber is heading to the bullpen... but only for a few days.

Because of Saturday night’s rained out game against the Cleveland Indians and an upcoming day off Tuesday, the Chicago White Sox and their six-man rotation were looking at a serious backlog of down time for some starters.

To alleviate that, Humber will be skipped this time through the rotation and will be on call as a reliever starting Sunday. He had been scheduled to start Sunday, but Edwin Jackson assumed that spot since his outing was rained out Saturday.

“I’m good with it; whatever they want me to do,” Humber said. “I’ve said all along, when they give me the ball, I’ll do the best I can with it. Just now I got a chance to pitch today, tomorrow or the next day, so we’ll see what happens. I think we’ve got a bunch of guys throwing the ball well. And hopefully I’ll have an opportunity to help them in the bullpen maybe.”

In a key series against the Detroit Tigers that starts Monday at U.S. Cellular Field, the White Sox will go with a pitching order of Mark Buehrle, Jake Peavy and John Danks.

The White Sox will then reset the rotation once again after Thursday’s off day. If Humber isn’t needed in relief this week, he can presumably start Friday in the opener of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. If he is needed, the plan can be altered again.

“[It’s] just because I don’t want those guys to miss starts,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “I don’t want them to stay that long. That’s a lot of days without throwing and then we can use this kid out of the bullpen because he’s the only one we can use out of the bullpen. Last time we used Peavy out of the bullpen, he got in trouble to come back.

“I think Humber needs a little bit of a break. That’s the only reason we do it. I don’t want those three guys to go without pitching for so long.”
