Rapid Reaction: Red Sox 5, White Sox 3

CHICAGO -- The White Sox appeared to relax at the moment the trade deadline passed Sunday, and the Red Sox rallied for a 5-3 victory to take two of three in the series.

How it happened: The White Sox were productive early with RBIs from Brent Morel, Alex Rios and Alexei Ramirez. But after Paul Konerko was knocked out of the game when he was hit by a pitch on his left knee, the White Sox never scored again. Mark Buehrle gave up a two-run home run to Jason Varitek, but the big blow was a two-run single from Dustin Pedroia in the seventh inning.

What it means: The idea when the White Sox traded for Jason Frasor was that by improving their bullpen they’d be able to win low-scoring games. But even with the lead Sunday, that theory was blown out of the water when Jesse Crain gave up the tying and go-ahead runs in the seventh inning, and Will Ohman gave up an insurance run in the ninth that was charged to Frasor.

Outside the box: Before Crain coughed up two runs in the seventh inning that gave the Red Sox the lead, the White Sox’s bullpen had a 1.65 ERA over its last 27 games and a 1.70 mark over its last 35.

Up next: White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy (4-4, 5.27 ERA) takes the mound Monday in the opener of a four-game series against the Yankees. New York will counter with left-hander CC Sabathia (15-5, 2.56) in the 7:10 p.m. start from U.S. Cellular Field.
