It appears it will be a busy week at Triple-A Charlotte for White Sox pitchers. Freddy Garcia will be moved up from Single-A Kannapolis and will make a start with Charlotte on Tuesday, according to White Sox sources. Jake Peavy's first rehab start will be Thursday with the Knights.
The consensus among Sox brass is, if Garcia has two good starts at Triple-A, he will be a viable alternative in the fifth-starter role. Jose Contreras continues to struggle in that position, and if he has trouble in his next outing in Oakland next weekend, he could be the odd man out of the rotation.
Contreras is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in his past five starts, and is tied for the league lead in losses with 11.
Peavy will throw a side session in Charlotte on Monday. I asked Peavy what that will hold in store for him.
"It will be more conventional than the one I threw on Saturday," Peavy said. "I'll just throw 30 to 35 pitches. No live hitters, it'll just be me and the catcher getting ready for my start."
The White Sox expect him to have three starts in the minors before moving up. That schedule would put him on track to face the New York Yankees Aug. 28 in the Bronx.
