A completely forgettable weekend for the White Sox at Detroit ended with an embarrassing 18-2 defeat Sunday and a three-game sweep.

How it happened: The White Sox could do nothing right against the Tigers, to say the least. They trailed just 1-0 halfway through the third inning, but by the end of the sixth they were down 16-0. Mark Buehrle and Shane Lindsay each gave up seven runs. When the White Sox finally scored in the ninth inning it snapped a streak of 26 consecutive runs by the Tigers going back to Saturday’s game. ESPN’s Pedro Gomez reported the White Sox considered using Adam Dunn to pitch in the ninth inning, but manager Ozzie Guillen nixed that idea.
What it means: Appearing stunned after the Tigers’ comeback victory on Saturday, the White Sox had nothing in the tank for their division rival in the series finale. At the very least the White Sox could have used innings from their starter heading into Monday’s doubleheader but Mark Buehrle lasted just 3 1/3. When the series at Detroit started, a White Sox sweep meant a 2½-game deficit in the division, but it went the exact opposite way and the gap now stands at 8½ with the White Sox no longer in serious contention, although not officially eliminated.
Outside the numbers: The White Sox were swept in Detroit for the second time this season (also April 22-24). They are 2-10 in their last 12 games at Comerica Park and have been outscored 82-35 over that stretch.
Up next: The White Sox will play a day-night doubleheader at Minnesota on Monday with right-hander Phil Humber (8-8, 3.63 ERA) pitching in the first game and right-hander Zach Stewart (1-2, 5.86) in the second game. The Twins will counter with right-hander Anthony Swarzak (3-5, 4.14) in Game 1 and left-hander Scott Diamond (1-2, 4.82) in Game 2. The first game begins at 1:10 p.m. at Target Field and Game 2 begins at 7:10 p.m.
