MINNEAPOLIS -- A blowout by the Detroit Tigers on Sunday and a doubleheader a day later at least meant good things for Chicago White Sox pitcher Dylan Axelrod.

The White Sox purchased the contract of the right-hander before the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Twins and he will be available out of the bullpen.

The White Sox used four relievers in Sunday’s game to cover 4 2/3 innings. Recent minor-league call-ups Addison Reed and Shane Lindsay threw at least 40 pitches. In the opener of Monday’s doubleheader, the White Sox used three relievers in support of winner Philip Humber.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Tony Pena (Tommy John surgery) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. The active roster is now at 31 players.

Axelrod, a Southern California native, was a combined 9-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 150 2/3 innings in the White Sox’s minor-league system this season. He had 132 strikeouts and 35 walks. At Triple-A Charlotte he was 6-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 15 outings.

He was signed as a free agent in August of 2009 out of the independent Frontier League not long after he had been released by the San Diego Padres.

The 26-year-old entered the 2011 season ranked by Baseball America as having the best control in the White Sox’s minor-league system. He helped UC Irvine to a spot in the College World Series in 2007.
