The White Sox won’t have to go back to the drawing board when it comes to their new coaching staff.

Third-base coach Joe McEwing is staying after all with the news Sunday that the St. Louis Cardinals hired Mike Matheny as their new manager. McEwing was given permission to interview with the Cardinals after he had been hired by the White Sox.

Drafted by the Cardinals in the 28th round in 1992, McEwing played his first two big-league seasons in St. Louis starting in 1998.

McEwing is one of three new members of the White Sox’s coaching staff, not counting new manager Robin Ventura. Other new faces are bench coach Mark Parent and hitting coach Jeff Manto.

The manager at Triple-A Charlotte last season, McEwing is heading into his first season as a major-league coach.
