SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Sean O'Sullivan threw five hitless innings and Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer and Kansas City defeated Chicago.

O'Sullivan, who had allowed nine hits and four runs in four innings in his previous two outings in relief, retired his first 14 batters before walking Alexei Ramirez in the fifth. That was the only base runner for O'Sullivan.

Gordon, who agreed to a four-year $37.5 million contract before the game, went 2 for 2 with an opposite-field homer off left-hander Eric Stults in the second inning.

Eric Hosmer drove in two runs with a fifth-inning single, increasing his RBI total to a Cactus League-leading 28.

  • Phil Humber gave up four runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings against a Reds farm club. He struck out five, walked one and threw 65 strikes in 106 pitches.
