Sox assistant Gellinger hospitalized
By Bruce Levine
DETROIT -- Chicago White Sox assistant hitting coach Mike Gellinger is recovering in a Baltimore hospital after blacking out in his hotel room on Wednesday.
According to Sox general manager Ken Williams, Gellinger suffered trauma to the vertebrae and would go back to Chicago on Sunday for further evaluation.
This is the second medical incident on the Sox staff this season. Kevin Hickey, a batting practice assistant, died on May 14. He passed out in Texas during the team’s first road trip and never came out of a coma.
Gellinger, 47, has served in a number of on-and off-the-field roles for the White Sox over the past 20 years. He was a Chicago-area Fremd high school graduate in 1982. He also played college baseball at Southern Illinois.
