A.J. Pierzynski wins Silver Slugger award

By Staff

White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was named a Silver Slugger award winner for the first time Thursday.

Pierzynski, who hit .278 with a career-high 27 home runs this season, joins Carlton Fisk (1981, 1985, 1988) as the only catchers in White Sox history to be selected for the award.

Pierzynski, 35, also set career highs in runs scored (68), slugging percentage (.501) and OPS (.827) and matched his career best with 77 RBIs.

The Silver Slugger award winners are determined by a vote of MLB coaches and managers who named the players they believed to be the best offensive producers at each position in the AL and NL. Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own teams.
