Closer candidates Nate Jones (back) and Matt Lindstrom (oblique) were both injured during spring training, with Lindstrom eventually breaking camp with the job. Jones is still out of action after back surgery.
Lindstrom started the season slowly and just as he was hitting his stride, he went on the disabled list with an ankle injury that required surgery. Ronald Belisario inherited the job from Lindstrom after having success in a setup role, but the closer spot did not suit him and he was removed.
Manager Robin Ventura went to a closer-by-committee situation, with Putnam and Jake Petricka getting the bulk of the chances. Attrition seems to have given the job to Petricka, although Lindstrom could be headed out on a minor league rehab assignment as early as next week.
Putnam is 3-2 with a 2.35 ERA this season. He has three saves and a team-best 12 holds in 42 appearances. Rienzo was 4-5 with a 5.87 ERA in 14 appearances (11 starts).
