Gray leaves Sox with head held high

By Doug Padilla

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- As expected, Jeff Gray was removed from the White Sox roster Wednesday to clear a spot for Jake Peavy.

Gray was designated for assignment and will now have to pass through waivers, where he can be claimed by any club. He can also elect to remain in the White Sox organization and accept an assignment to Triple-A Charlotte once the waiver period ends.

Gray had an impressive sendoff Tuesday night when he pitched three scoreless innings against the Angels in relief of a struggling John Danks. After the outing, Gray was saying his goodbyes to teammates even though the White Sox had not made the move official.

Actual word on the roster move came Wednesday morning, hours before Peavy was set to take the mound in his first major league start in 10 months after recovering from surgery to reattach his latissimus dorsi muscle.

Gray was impressive in six appearances from a long relief role. He posted a 2.70 ERA over 13 1/3 innings. Gray signed with the White Sox in November as a free agent. He didn't make the White Sox roster out of spring training but was recalled on April 7 when the pitching staff was expanded to 12 members.
