Guillen: Gray claim is good news for MLB

By Doug Padilla

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Friday that he is actually relieved that reliever Jeff Gray was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners.

He’s not relieved that the White Sox lost a quality pitcher, of course, just relieved that somebody else recognized that he was one.

“I have a bet at dinner with some of the coaches that if this guy doesn’t get picked up them I don’t believe in scouts,” Guillen said. “If this guy went through waivers with nobody picking him up, then we don’t have scouts in the stands. Now we find out we have scouts in the stands. He did very good for us.”

Gray was designated for assignment Wednesday when Jake Peavy was reinstated to the roster. He had to be exposed to all other teams before he could be sent to Triple-A.

Gray had a 2.70 ERA over six relief appearances, throwing three scoreless innings during his final White Sox outing Tuesday.
