Viciedo looks, feels ready for call up

By Bruce Levine

PHOENIX -- The White Sox's season-long scoring slump may make a post All-Star break promotion for Dayan Viciedo a no-brainer.

The Sox are loaded with hitters in the outfield and designated hitter spots, which is the initial reason Viciedo was sent back to Triple-A Charlotte out of spring training. However, the 22-year-old outfielder has been making his case to move up, hitting .330 with 12 homers and 55 RBIs in the first half.

“I feel I’m ready to go,” Viciedo said through an interpreter at the Futures Game on Sunday. “If they call me up, I know I’m ready for the major leagues now.”

The White Sox signed the Cuban free agent to a four-year, $10 million contract on Dec. 12, 2008. Viciedo defected from Cuba in early 2008.

Viciedo, who had a cup of coffee with the White Sox last season, feels he’s better prepared now.

“I feel much more comfortable as a hitter now,” Viciedo said. “Last year was an experience, but I feel much more comfortable as a hitter now and more ready to play (in the majors)”.
