Flowers, A.J. to split time in September

By Doug Padilla

CHICAGO -- Tyler Flowers hasn’t kicked A.J. Pierzynski to the bench for the final month, but he will definitely alter playing time behind the plate in September.

Pierzynski is expected to return from the disabled list Friday after suffering a serious bone bruise in his left arm that the White Sox’s medical staff labeled a fracture.

But Flowers has been playing well in his place, and a smooth transition back to Pierzynski isn’t expected this weekend. Manager Ozzie Guillen looked almost pained when asked what happens to Flowers' playing time.

“Tyler has been great; very good,” Guillen said. “When A.J. gets here, we figure out how we play him. I don’t want to say A.J. is not playing, but we really like, I really like, the way Tyler is behind the plate right now.”

Flowers has done his part at the plate and has even coaxed solid pitching performances out of the White Sox’s staff from behind it. Jake Peavy struggled in the first inning Wednesday, but even he got back on track starting in the second inning.

Pierzynski was expected to close out his rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday and join the White Sox for a road trip that begins Friday in Detroit.
