Brent Morel could be headed to DL

Chicago White Sox third baseman Brent Morel could be placed on the disabled list due to a lower-back injury, manager Robin Ventura said Saturday.

Morel had a cortisone shot for his back on May 10. He said his back felt good for a few days afterward, but he began to feel pain again Thursday while returning from the team’s trip from Los Angeles. He attempted to take batting practice prior to Friday’s game with the Chicago Cubs, and the pain worsened.

Morel wasn’t in the White Sox’s lineup again on Saturday.

“Possibly (he’ll go to the disabled list,)” Ventura said prior to Saturday’s game. “We’re going to kind of monitor it. Going to give him (Saturday) to see how it feels.”

Morel wasn’t sure why his back began to hurt again.

“I don’t know what happened,” Morel said prior to Saturday’s game. “It just felt good about three days there and then kind of took two days to get that tight (Friday.)”

Morel said an MRI revealed he wouldn’t need surgery.

“They said no surgery; (the doctor) just said bulged disc,” Morel said. “I’m kind of new to it all. See what it takes to get ready now, still trying to play with some different things.

“I don’t know if we’re going to take the weekend off and then Monday, and that’s four days and go from there; kind of wait and see.”

Morel has 20 hits in 113 at-bats for a .177 average this season. He had reached base on a hit in four of the White Sox’s last six games.

“It’s tough,” Morel said of the injury. “(I was) starting to feel good and be able to swing hard and swing normal for a couple days there. It’s right back to where it is now. I hope it’s something I can fix and play the rest of the year and be fine.”

Eduardo Escobar filled in for Morel again on Saturday.
